Effective May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers must show a REAL ID or an accepted alternative to fly domestically. Are you ready? Here’s what you need to know from your travel experts at Totally Vacations.
✅ What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a federally approved form of identification that meets enhanced security standards. Starting May 7, 2025, all travelers 18 and older will need one of the following to board a domestic flight:
- A REAL ID-compliant state-issued driver’s license or ID (look for a star! ⭐)
- Or another accepted form of ID (see list below)
🔍 How Do I Know If My ID Is REAL ID Compliant?
Check the top corner of your driver’s license or ID.
- A gold or black star means you’re good to go!
- No star? You’ll need to upgrade before you fly.
🧳 What If I Don’t Have a REAL ID?
You can still travel with an alternative approved ID, such as:
- A valid U.S. passport or passport card
- U.S. military ID
- DHS Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
- Permanent resident card
📝 How to Get a REAL ID
Visit your state’s Secretary of State or DMV office in person with the following:
- Proof of identity (passport or birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card or W-2)
- Two proofs of address (utility bills, bank statements)
Requirements may vary by state, so check your local DMV’s website first.
🧭 Why This Matters for Travelers
If you’re flying anywhere in the U.S. after May 7, 2025, you must have:
- A REAL ID or
- Another TSA-approved form of ID
Without it, you may be denied boarding—even for short domestic trip
